Stripe Managed Payments

With Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe sells to your buyers through Link and sends them their receipts and invoices. Here is what changes for you, the cases where you are still the seller, and what you book.

What works today

Stripe is the seller, through Link

Stripe Managed Payments is Stripe's merchant-of-record product: "Use Managed Payments to sell digital products such as SaaS, software, and digital content or downloads" (Stripe docs, read 18 October 2026). On those sales, "The customer sees Link as the merchant of record, and sees purchases as Sold through Link."

So the buyer's documents come from Stripe: "Stripe always sends receipts, invoices, and any refund or credit note notifications directly to the customer after payment. PDF versions of receipts and invoices are always attached."

Do not invoice those sales yourself

Your buyer already has an invoice from the merchant of record. A second invoice from you would name a second seller for the same sale. When a buyer asks you for an invoice, point them to the one Stripe sent. See merchant of record for how other platforms handle it.

The exceptions: when you are still responsible

Managed Payments does not cover every sale. Stripe writes: "For sales to customers in countries where Managed Payments can’t assume liability for tax compliance, you’re responsible for handling all compliance requirements for indirect taxes (sales tax, VAT, and GST)." For those sales, "Managed Payments sends invoices to your customers for the transactions where you’re responsible for tax compliance", in your business name and with your tax details.

Two more limits from the same docs: "Managed Payments supports direct integrations only", and the list of unsupported features includes "Generating a one-off invoice on a Customer object or for a subscription outside the billing period".

What Stripe's reports record

On Managed Payments sales, Stripe pays you out after its fees and the tax it withheld, and its reports keep those figures apart: "Use withheld_tax to identify the indirect tax that Stripe withheld and remitted on your behalf." Those reports are your source records; how you book them is a question for your accountant.

InvoiceCow is built to import these sales next to the invoices of your ordinary Stripe sales, and to send no second invoice. That import is planned, with the status shown above. On an ordinary Stripe account, where you are the seller, see Stripe invoice.

InvoiceCow is not affiliated with Stripe. Stripe and Link are trademarks of their owner.
