Gumroad sells to your buyers
Gumroad's terms are explicit: "Gumroad is the merchant of record for the resale of your Products to the Buyers, and … you shall not issue any invoice or make any demand for payment to any Buyer in relation to any completed resale of your Products through the Services" (Gumroad terms, 6.1, read 18 October 2026). Gumroad's pricing page adds: "Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad handles ALL your tax obligations."
So a Gumroad buyer's invoice comes from Gumroad, not from you.
How a buyer gets the invoice
Gumroad lets the buyer make it: "You can print your own invoice by clicking the Generate link at the bottom of your receipt" (Gumroad help, read 18 October 2026). The buyer enters their name and address there. An EU business buyer "can also enter your VAT registration number and automatically process a refund for the VAT you paid."
One caution from the same page: "Gumroad Support doesn't have the capability to change or adjust invoices", so the buyer should add everything their tax office needs before they generate it.
When a Gumroad buyer writes to you for an invoice, send them this link and the "Generate" step. Do not make one yourself.
What you keep for your books
You sell to Gumroad, and Gumroad pays you out. The payout is a settlement, not the price your buyers paid: sales, Gumroad's fee and the payout are separate figures. Keep Gumroad's own records of your sales and payouts as the source documents, and ask your accountant how to book them. See merchant of record for how Paddle's statements set out the same figures.
InvoiceCow is built to import your Gumroad sales next to the invoices of your own sales, and never to send a second invoice to a Gumroad buyer. That import is planned, with the status shown above. If you also sell directly through Stripe, those sales are yours to invoice: see Stripe invoice.
InvoiceCow is not affiliated with Gumroad. Gumroad is a trademark of its owner.
